A Technical Guidance Manual:
Terminology and Index Testing Procedures for Rolled Erosion Control Products

13. POROSITY

13.1 Scope - Determination of porosity serves to provide information regarding the porous area within the material structure.

13.2 Procedure

13.2.1 Determine mass per unit area in accordance with ASTM D6475 (ECB’s) or D6566 (TRM’s).

13.2.2 Determine density in accordance with ASTM D792.

13.2.3 Determine thickness in accordance with Section 8.

13.3 Calculation

13.3.1 Calculate porosity as follows.

porosity, n

= 100 (1- m/pt)

n

= porosity, in %

m

= mass/unit area, g/cm2 (as determined in ASTM D 5261)

p

= density, g/cm3 (as determined in ASTM D 792)

t

= thickness, cm (as determined in Section 8)

13.4 Report

13.4.1 Report the open volume per unit area and denote whether it was calculated from published minimum, minimum average roll or typical values. If the value was obtained from a single test, denote that fact.
